Lion’s Head Meatballs
This popular Chinese meatball recipe is a celebratory dish often served during Chinese New year. The meatballs are relatively bigger than ordinary meatballs. This recipe may be served with steamed vegetables.
Ingredients
- 500g Ground Pork
- 2 tsp Ginger, grated
- 1 whole Onion, chopped
- 2 tsp Garlic, minced
- 1 Tbsp Chinese Cooking Wine
- 1 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1 tsp Pepper
- 1 tsp Chinese 5 Spice Powder
- 1 Tbsp Oyster Sauce
- ¼ cup Spring Onion, chopped
- 2 Tbsp Cornstarch
- ½ cup Breadcrumbs
- 1 pc Egg
- 2 Tbsp Vegetable Oil
- 1 thumb-sized Ginger, sliced
- 2 stalks Leeks, sliced
- 2 Tbsp Light brown sugar
- 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1 ½ cup Water
- 1 Tbsp Cornstarch
- ¼ cup Water
- 1 Tbsp Sesame Oil

Step-by-Step Directions
- 1. In a bowl, mix the first 13 ingredients. Shape it into balls as big as a golf ball.
- 2. Deep the meatballs in hot oil until brown in color. Set it aside.
- 3. Pour 2 tbsp oil in a pot over medium heat. Saute ginger and leeks until light brown in color. Add sugar, soy sauce and water.
- 4. Simmer for a minute then add mixture or cornstarch and ¼ cup water to thicken the sauce.
- 5. Once the sauce has thickened, add the meatballs. Braise the meatballs for 5-8 minutes.
- 6. Turn off heat and serve hot.
